Parenting books

I'm getting to that time where I ought to start thinking about how to raise our baby. I've been looking at some different parenting books, but I wanted the opinion of my friends before I purchase anything.
If you've read any parenting books, which did you like and why?
Thanks everybody!

The main book that everyone gets...that weekly pregnancy book with the lady sitting in the rocking chair on the cover...that was fun but a little too general for me. It was very interesting but by month 5 I put it back on the shelf and never looked at it again.

BUT a very good one to read when you are about 8 months pregnant is Baby Wise. Its all about how to get your baby on a sleeping schedule and it seriously works as long as you do it. Most babies who do BabyWise sleep through the night around 10 weeks! Its a little tough in the beginning but totally WORTH IT. AND because the baby is a on a feeding/sleeping schedule YOU will be on a schedule and have great milk supply and no surprise leaks...usually...and will be able to plan ahead because you know your baby's schedule so you can make appointments and its just GREAT.

Thats what I think. : )

Amen to the Baby Wise. Of course, we didn't keep Seth on a strict schedule, but we used the principles.

Also, the Baby Whisperer is pretty good. Well, the first chapter is. I actually took lots of advice from parents I admired. And watched them. Like a hawk. You have an advantage to be in such close proximity to so many moms. Do you like what they do to their children? If they have slightly older children, do you like how they behave/handle themselves? Granted, personality plays a huge part, but I believe there's a lot of research to do in the observation and contemplation departments.

P.S. Congrats on expecting. We are SO excited for you!!

Definitely get the book "What to Expect the First Year", and then later "What to Expect the Toddler Years". They're fantasic reference books with answers to everything you'd ever be curious about(i.e.- if your baby wakes up in the middle of the night projectile vomiting, you can look up in the book what you should do, like if you need to panic and call the doctor, or just clean it up and call in the morning, etc...), and also month by month guides of what your baby will/should be doing that month. It's also loaded with tons of great questions and answers on EVERYTHING! I seriously look at one or both (for questions about baby AND Sawyer) of the books probably every day; I couldn't parent without them!

As for Baby Wise, I'm reading it right now & have mixed feelings. It contradicts a lot of other baby books on how to treat a newborn. Half of my mom friends love it, and half hate it- it's very controversial! :) Maybe read it and just see how you feel about it- if it goes against your mom instincts then try a different book instead ("Happy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby", or "Happiest Baby on the Block"). I just know that I didn't really do any sleep training for Sawyer, and he sucked at sleeping; so I wanted to actually TRY a strategy on Hunter to see if this baby will sleep for me. Good luck!

Well I just wanted to make another comment on BabyWise. It does say to do things opposite of what our baby doc told us, so that was a little strange, and it goes against pretty much everything in "Happiest Baby on the Block" (those are the two I read) so it was hard to decide what to do. I personally mixed the two together. Allie has been sleeping 9+ hours a night since she was 3 1/2 months and I really think it was because of BabyWise! (most babywise babies sleep by 2 months, so Allie was late, but i will take 3 1/2 months over 7 months any day!) I will say that I hated it too. Its so hard to be on a schedule, Im a 'play it by ear' type of gal, so I hated the first two months, but then I got used to it and its been so nice. Just read it and see what you think!!!

have you thought of any names for your little guy??
